I didn’t choose this path; it chose me.

From Sepsis to Sight

Why I’m Questioning the Last 25 Years I’ve spent the last several years fighting for my life. Between chemotherapy, radiation, and a life-saving stem cell transplant, my body has been a primary battlefield. But it was during my descent into different states of consciousness while battling sepsis that something else happened: my third eye opened.…

The Weight of the Room

During my cancer battle I learned that silence has a weight. There is the heavy silence of the people who love you but are paralyzed by the fear of saying the wrong thing. You can feel their heart, even if you can’t hear their voice. But then, there is the cold silence. The silence of…

The Mess I’ll Miss

The Summer of 2026 will officially go down in our family history as the summer of the Lego City. If you walked into our basement right now, you’d see it: a massive, sprawling metropolis taking over the ping pong table, spilling onto the carpet, and claiming every available square foot. Ever since our oldest daughter…

What’s in a Name?

Picking out a name for a child is quite the task. It’s an even bigger hurdle when you’re a teacher. Anyone in education knows the struggle: you come across so many students throughout your career that certain names inevitably get, well… tainted. Luckily for me, I was never one to follow the trends. When searching…

To America, On Your 250th Birthday

Dear America, As we celebrate the monumental milestone of your 250th birthday, I find myself looking at you through the eyes of a survivor. I’ve spent years fighting for my life and that fight has changed how I see our future. As Americans, we have to start speaking up, not for a party, not for…

The Tale of Two Men

As a mama there are some stories that don’t just break your heart, they shatter it completely. You look at your own children, think about the future you are trying to build for them, and then you see the news and realize we are living in an absolute upside-down world. Right now, two parallel tragedies…

From Farm Fields to Server Farms

Why I’m Sounding the Horn on Iowa’s Data Centers I remember when the drive from Adventureland back to my home in the suburbs was a “windows down” kind of trip. It was a beautiful stretch of back roads, open land, and those iconic Iowa farm fields that make you feel like you’re exactly where you…

The Fourth Amendment Under Fire

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the Iowa Capitol with my oldest daughter for her fifth-grade field trip. Watching her walk through those halls while she’s been deep-diving into the Bill of Rights really hit home. It’s one thing to read about the Amendments in a textbook; it’s another to see how they…

Faith in the Crosshairs

There is a profound and painful irony unfolding across the Heartland. While the quiet, steepled icons of our rural communities are being shuttered, the vacuum is being filled by a loud, distorted version of “faith” that feels more like a campaign rally than a worship service. In Iowa, we are watching the heartbeat of our…

I just started my journey with MDS blood cancer on Thanksgiving. I can’t qualify for a bone marrow transplant ever because of my age. 73. I just realized I have to have an injection every three weeks and a blood draw two days after each one for the rest of my life. I am at the beginning, and I have a different cancer. You are such a survivor I can see that. Yes, you are inspirational, but I am going thru grief. I just went from denial to depression and anger. I am not at the acceptance stage as I am not even two months in. My first blood transfusion is tomorrow. I am so glad that I too have my faith, and I know that I am being carried by God and He is there even with me when I don’t sense his presence when I am in deep depression. Also, not stable rapid-cycling bipolar. I have microscopic colitis that can keep me home. A solo senior with no family. Parent have died. No spouse, no children. My niece immigrated to Israel. My goddaughter just got married to an Aussie and has immigrated to Australia. My two close friends are out of town. My brother is out of town. It makes it hard. And people that I thought were friends really aren’t. Maybe they are afraid of my diagnosis. But my doctor and his nurse are lovely, and Scripps Torrey Pines staff are great. A very warm environment. Alot of people with MDS are flying in from around the country as it is a rare blood cancer. San Diego. Thank you for letting me vent. I had to push for an appointment and I had to advocate to see a doctor and get a bone biopsy. I’m good at advocating. So many more illness. It is just shocking to me. I didn’t expect my life to be like this at 73 but you just don’t know what struggle you will have in life and we all have struggles and tragedies. No one escapes them.
