The Mess I’ll Miss

The Summer of 2026 will officially go down in our family history as the summer of the Lego City.

If you walked into our basement right now, you’d see it: a massive, sprawling metropolis taking over the ping pong table, spilling onto the carpet, and claiming every available square foot.

Ever since our oldest daughter took over the extra bedroom down there that used to be our playroom, the main basement area has just turned into one MASSIVE playroom.

On days when it’s dangerously hot outside or pouring rain, the basement is our refuge. It’s where thousands of little plastic bricks transform into hours of endless focus, building, and rebuilding.

I’ll be honest: some days, I walk down those stairs and my knee-jerk reaction is total overwhelm. I see the sheer chaos and feel a flash of embarrassment at the mess.

But then I pause.

Because the mess I see isn’t a mess to my kids. It’s their imagination come to life.

It’s their creativity on full, unapologetic display. It’s proof that our home is lived in. Summer isn’t about pristine spaces, color-coded bins, or perfect organization. It’s about being together. It’s about making memories.

One day, my basement will be tidy.

There won’t be stray bricks hiding in the carpet waiting for an unsuspecting bare foot.

The ping pong table won’t be covered in a Lego City anymore.

Although my feet may hurt when I accidentally step on a stray Lego today, my heart is going to hurt way more when they’re all gone forever. The mess I see today will be the mess that I miss in the future.

God willing, one day when I’m a grandma, I will look back at this memory and smile. I’ll remember all those times they wanted to give me “tours” of their newest build.

So for now, I’m just going to step over the Legos and enjoy the mess.
